Industrial valves are designed to operate reliably for years, yet many purchasing decisions and maintenance practices are still influenced by outdated assumptions. While engineering standards continue to evolve, certain valve myths remain surprisingly common across water treatment, oil & gas, power generation, mining, and chemical processing. Myth 1: A Higher Pressure Rating Always Means a Better Valve

One of the most common misconceptions is that selecting the highest pressure class automatically provides a safer or more durable solution. In reality, valve selection should always match the actual operating conditions.

Oversized pressure ratings often increase equipment cost, weight, and installation complexity without improving system performance. Material compatibility, temperature limits, corrosion resistance, sealing design, and flow characteristics are equally important. A valve that is correctly matched to the application typically performs better than one that is simply built for higher pressure.

Successful valve selection begins with understanding the complete operating environment rather than focusing on a single specification.

Myth 2: All Valves Require the Same Maintenance Strategy

Another widespread belief is that every industrial valve should follow the same inspection schedule. While routine maintenance is essential, different valve types experience wear in different ways.

Butterfly valves used in clean water systems often require different maintenance intervals than gate valves installed in abrasive slurry service. Ball valves handling corrosive chemicals may demand more frequent seal inspections than valves operating in standard cooling water applications.

Maintenance programs should consider service conditions, operating frequency, media characteristics, and manufacturer recommendations. Predictive maintenance supported by condition monitoring often delivers better long-term reliability than fixed inspection intervals.

Myth 3: Valve Failure Is Usually a Manufacturing Problem

When a valve leaks or fails prematurely, manufacturing quality is often blamed first. Although production defects can occur, field experience shows that many valve failures originate elsewhere.

Improper installation, incorrect actuator sizing, unsuitable material selection, excessive operating cycles, water hammer, or poor system design frequently contribute to performance problems. Even a high-quality industrial valve cannot compensate for incorrect application or installation practices.

Engineers who evaluate the complete operating system—including piping layout, pressure fluctuations, and maintenance history—are usually able to identify the actual root cause more effectively than focusing only on the valve itself.

Understanding the Facts Leads to Better Valve Performance

Modern industrial valve engineering is based on matching the right valve to the right application rather than relying on long-standing assumptions. Careful consideration of operating conditions, media compatibility, pressure requirements, maintenance planning, and installation quality helps improve equipment life while reducing unexpected downtime.

Whether the project involves municipal water treatment, mining operations, oil & gas facilities, or power plants, informed valve selection almost always delivers better long-term performance than following outdated industry myths.
